This is something that a friend and I have been discussing off and on at times.
Now before I go any further, let me make it clear that I have nothing against people who are homosexual. Frankly, it does not matter to me what someone's sexual orientation is, because everyone has their own life and they have every right to live it however they choose.
But, especially in this day and age, it seems like a lot of gay people wave their sexuality around like a flag, they have parades and they create internet groups and basically make a lot of noise about how they are being discriminated.
Yet the term "homophobe" has become so widely used, and so easily used, it sounds more like mere noise, or a joke, than anything else.
The way things are going, it seems like it's considered "old news" or "uncool" or whatever term I am trying to find here, to be straight. Almost as if it's okay and totally awesome to be a gay person or a lesbian, but apparently being straight is something shameful.
Does this mean that it's not okay to be straight, just because gays and lesbians are trying so hard to be accepted as normal? Frankly, you're not going to win any battles by making it look like the OTHER side is doing wrong. Don't be a heterophobe, in other words. And yes, I am positive that heterophobes DO exist.
Yet there are places where people can't even use a term like "heterophobe" because... well, you know how it works. The poor little minority group that wants so badly to be accepted whines and throws tantrums, so that they can get their way, and nothing bad can be said about them, because the ones who try to get labeled "homophobe" or "politically incorrect" or "intolerant".
Of course, not all gay people are like this. I know some who are perfectly nice. They are willing to live their own lives the way they want to, and to let others live however they want to.
But to the fanatical ones who have the attitude problems and get way too defensive, come on, STOP being so childish about it. You want to be regarded as a bunch of overgrown two-year-olds screaming and throwing tantrums? Then keep on giving the lifestyle you're trying to defend a bad name and see where it gets you!
Seriously, no matter what the issue is, it is always the fanatics--the ones who try their HARDEST to get their message across as vocally as possible--who always give the rest of those who are like them, (the ones who actually prefer to live calm lives and treat others civilly) a bad name.
SO CUT IT OUT.
There, I'm done.
